Big Damn Hero: Redux
Nov. 23rd, 2011 06:59 pmYou may remember my story from a few months ago about removing sparrows from the coffee shop. Well, it happened again!
First thing this morning a sparrow came flying into the coffee shop, and was dipping and diving around the regulars, flying back and forth through the store. I tried to shoo it toward the front door, but it just veered around some more, managing to get into the back room, and up into the ducts. I knew I couldn't get it down from there, so I just left it alone, hoping it will come out on its own. I also propped the back door open so it could get out that way. Well, it decided the best option was to fly out toward the front of the store, right against the front window. I think it must have knocked itself dizzy, because while it still hopped away from me as I approached it, it seemed disoriented. I finally cornered it under a counter and very gently picked it up. Like its compatriots from September, it bit me in defiance. But I think that was the extent of the fight it had left in it, because it very calmly let me carry it to the front door.
As I stepped outside and a few feet from the door, I opened my hands, expecting the bird to fly away. And this is how I know it was disoriented, because the silly thing stayed perched on my finger! I tried wiggling my hand a bit, and it just shifted its grip. I patted its back (and omg, sparrows are REALLY soft) and it just ducked a bit. It finally tried to hop off my finger onto the fence we were next to, and wound up fluttering a few feet away. Right next to my regular's black lab puppy! Of course the dog lunged for it, I lunged for the dog, and the bird was just sitting there, looking at us. I tried to reach down to scoop it up again, and its dizziness must have finally dissipated. That, or its survival instincts kicked in, because as I reached, it took off! Flew low, but steadily, across the street, and landed among the shrubs.
As I went back into the store, the regulars all teased me about trying to feed the bird to the dog, but whatever. I would have liked to see them catch and release a frickin sparrow!
Like I said, Big Damn Hero. Who then proceeded to thoroughly wash her hands.
