Some Serious Stuff
Mar. 19th, 2011 04:11 pmFriday a week ago, two women who work on the same block as I do were assaulted, and one of those women subsequently died. Police were looking for two men who'd allegedly entered the store late at night in masks and gloves, and the entire neighborhood has been shocked and scared. My coworker made sure to arrive early each day we opened together, and we've increased the safety precautions for closers. It is all anyone can talk about, and all anyone has been talking about for the past week. It is upsetting, but understandable, that this is dominating conversations- Bethesda Row, where the murder took place, is an upscale shopping area, and violent crime is incredibly rare. According to the police officers I've spoken to, the last murder in the area occurred in the 80s. So yeah, people are talking. I just wish they'd stop talking to me. A woman died, one who came in the coffee shop, and I'm sad and scared and tired of talking about it, but people act as though I'll have more information than they do, when really all I'm hearing is the exact same stuff.
However, as of yesterday, police released the name of the surviving woman, and announced that she'd been arrested in connection with the murder. So, on the one hand, I can worry less about two homicidal rapists running around free, but on the other, more people will want to talk about this "shocking development." Not particularly looking forward to work tomorrow morning.
