Battlestar Galactica

Finished the series. Thank you, LJ buddies, for not spoiling me, unlike certain idiotic Facebook friends.

So! Let's talk about it!

Boomer ended up pissing me off throughout. Too easily mislead, too ready to believe in the Cylon god, too ready to not understand how humans would react to a Cylon invasion. Basically, too ready to be lead anywhere that was away from what her experiences led her to understand. Seriously, when I saw her making out with Cavill, I gagged.

Speaking of Cavill, basically a spoiled child who thought he wasn't the favored and flipped out because of it, yeah? I did not like him during season 3, then I watched the episode where Ellen Tigh wakes up and I liked him even less. Because, seriously, it seemed like he was a petulant little kid who got everything that he asked for and then whined because it wasn't what he expected. Especially once Ellen started laying out what he'd done to each of the Final Five, he just came across as a fussy toddler denied his fave passie.

The whole "Mutiny" thing- though I hate a lot of Jacob's recaps, gotta agree with him regarding the mutiny. They got the trashiest established characters to go along with it, and somehow expected us to sympathize? After her speech to Sam, I wanted Seelix dead. It is my personal canon that she did die. Same with the civilian who'd previously been on the "jury"- he turned his legitimate grief over his son into a bloody vengeance scheme, and didn't learn his lesson TWICE! As for Gaeta- I'm sorry you lost your leg, and I'm sorry you fell in love with a murderous Eight, but you need to own your fuck-ups, and not blame them on everyone else.

Gah!

Anyhow, speak to me, about any character, I would honestly love to discuss the whole series, including characters that I've dissed. Let's talk!

Hey.

Hey so.

Hey so think about the female characters, right? Think about the female characters and try to think of one of the main female characters who didn't die or get killed (at least once).

Yeah.

Yeah, I know, right?

Boomer is actually my favorite story arc, in paralell with Athena.

When we first meet Athena, she *is* Boomer. She shares all of Boomer's memories, but also has knowledge of who and what she is. Athena gets different options, though. Because of her circumstances, she succeeds. She is loved and trusted by Helo, and eventually loved and trusted by Adama, and then loved and trusted by the whole crew. She has a baby that is going to be the salvation of the Cylons. She has everything. Because she is whole, she can make choices that lead her to a happy ending.

Boomer gets a raw deal. She has no knowledge of who she is. She is programmed to betray every one around her. When the truth about her is revealed, she is rejected by her lover (who ironically turns out to be a Cylon himself), her commander and her crew mates. Every choice she makes after that is trying to find a way out of that place, to find someone to love her or accept her. She'll even turn to Cavil, if that's what it takes. All of her choices are bad, after everyone she ever loved turns on her for being who she is. When she finally makes a "good" choice and decides to help the humans, it means her death. Boomer has no good choices to make.

Taken together, those two characters are a comment on free will. We talk a lot about people choosing to be bad or fail or be poor. It's true that our lives are governed by our choices. In the context of our lives, though, there are some people who don't have any good choices. Helo's support opened up a path for Athena that gave her choices. Boomer had no support and no good choices.
